Retail Hero Chapter 1: BMS Organic

This is the story of a young man in his 20s who used his knowledge of technology to help a 23-year-old organic grocery retail business with digital transformation. He created membership data management to help the company survive the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, saving the jobs of over 500 employees.

Today, under his leadership, the company is slowly recovering and business is booming; it is eyeing an IPO in the future.

In an interview with Exabytes, this young man said the changes brought to the retail industry in the post-pandemic era have led his company to move to a business model where online and offline stores coexist. At the same time, the company also plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence technology to provide customers with a better shopping experience.

Sourcing Member Data and Implementing Pinpoint Marketing

In fact, BMS Organics started setting up their website and digital transformation a long time ago, all thanks to BMS Organics’s president, Mr Terry.

Terry is an expert in technology, and he understands the importance of big data for the retail industry. So, after graduating from university and joining BMS Organics, he started working on the integration of members’ data.
“Before I took over, BMS Organics registered their members manually. Members had to prepare a personal photo of themselves and then manually enter their information, and the clerk had to use the member information book each time. It was very troublesome and inconvenient.”

Terry emphasized that members could help promote products and improve brand reputation. Through the membership information database, operators can better understand customer consumption habits, identify regular customers who have high purchasing consumption, and subsequently implement more accurate marketing strategies.

“In the future, we plan to not only leverage big data, but also go further and introduce Artificial Intelligence technology to provide our customers with a better experience.”

Live Life and Promote the Concept of Health

Terry believes that BMS Organics is a company that can help people become healthier and the planet become more sustainable. Although the Covid-19 pandemic is slowing down, we occasionally hear news that other viruses are still emerging around the world.

Therefore, BMS Organics takes responsibility for protecting the planet, promoting organic, healthy living, and making the world a better place.

In fact, when one walks into a BMS Organics store, he will instantly feel the difference in the retail salespeople. Instead of ignorantly selling products, the helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable sales consultants at BMS Organics are like friends who care about your health. They would passionately share their health knowledge with the customers with the intention of helping them live a healthy life.

Terry added that the aforementioned belief is deeply rooted in BMS Organics for the past 20 years and has enabled the company to overcome the great challenges of the pandemic and ensure employment for more than 500 staff members.

While BMS Organics was on the brink of bankruptcy during MCO, the team firmly persevered to spread the message of healthy living to the world.

Online Shop Or Physical Store? OMO (Online-Mege-Offline) Is King!

Looking back to the past three years when the pandemic was raging, Terry admitted that it was the most difficult time for BMS Organics, and the business almost ended. However, with his faith, Terry worked hard to help the company change its management strategy, stayed up late every day and worked late into the night, and radically changed the marketing model, stores, costs, and company products.
“The trend has shown many retailers the importance of having an online shop and digital marketing. In fact, BMS Organics enjoyed an exceptional online sales performance towards the end of the pandemic. Today, 99% of our marketing strategy is focused on digital marketing.”

As life is gradually returning to normal, BMS Organics’s monthly profits are gradually improving too. Terry distributed the company’s monthly surplus as a reward to thank its employees for sticking to the company and overcoming the difficult time during the pandemic.

Terry believes that despite the popularity it gained from its online store, brick-and-mortar stores are still needed. While many consumers have developed online shopping habits during the pandemic, most people tend to go to brick-and-mortar stores to experience the products after opening.

“There is one very important thing we learned from the pandemic: To be successful, BMS Organics needs to be specialized, small, and professional. OMO (Online-Merge-Offline) is the future of retail.”

Through education and services, we protect the health of the planet and the next generation

BMS Organics’ organic farm in Puchong is the company’s latest attempt at promoting healthy eating and eco-friendly concepts. Terry believes that the concept of caring for the planet should be instilled from an early age. Through games and activities, urban children experience the beauty of nature, and through interaction with animals, they become aware of the importance of protecting the environment.

Terry added that in the future, he will provide an open place for meditation to transmit positive energy and conduct educational activities through various channels so that more people can contribute to protecting the planet and future generations.

Absolutely No Adding Meat To The BMS‘ Hot Pot, Even If It Means Lower Profits

Those who have eaten at BMS Organics will always remember the sweet and refreshing hot pot soup. Some even think that adding slices of fish or pork belly would make it more delicious.

BMS Organics’s president, Mr Terry Lee admitted that many of his friends had suggested adding meat to the stew ingredients. They believed that by doing so, the restaurant would surely be full of customers.

However, the suggestion was firmly rejected by Terry. Terry stressed that BMS Organics’s belief is to teach people to care for the planet by living a healthy life with its organic vegetarian food, and the company never compromises on that.

“BMS stands for Body, Mind, and Soul. We believe that the pursuit of health covers the body, mind, and spirit. Do your best to inspire more people to live a healthy life with organic vegetarian nutrition and protect the planet together.”

And the sense of mission to inherit healthy nutrition is unique to BMS Organics.
