We all know that it is important to back up our business/computer data from time to time, but do you know that it is more advantageous to choose online backup over offline backup?
Online backup is a type of data backup that stores your data in an online storage space. This type of backup is popular among people who use the internet for work or entertainment.
Nowadays, online backups have become very popular in recent years because they can be accessed from anywhere, there are no limits on how much you can store, and they have many other benefits too.
You can also use online backup to back up your data to multiple locations for increased security and redundancy.
While Offline backup is a way to back up data without connecting to the internet. It is also called local backup. Offline backup is a way to protect data from being lost in case of a computer failure.
It is done by copying files to an external storage device and removing them from the computer. This ensures that the data can still be accessed even if the computer fails or someone deletes it.
Also, offline backups are known as cold backups because they are not online and cannot be accessed when connected to the internet, only when disconnected.
Backing up your data regularly is not only time consuming, but requires a lot of discipline. Most online backup solutions are automated for daily or weekly scheduling to make the entire process effortless and convenient.
Your company internal data are safer if you have online backup. Even if your PC / laptop breaks down, you can still get back all your data as long as the cloud where your backup is stored is unaffected..
By backing up your data online, your colleagues or other members in your organization can access the online backup account anywhere and anytime (in contrast of being limited to just a single device or memory storage) as long as you share the access password with them.
A local backup to a PC/laptop means that once the hardware is stolen, your data can never be recovered.
In this case, backing up your data online is safer. In addition, anyone who wants to access your online backup will need the right username and password to do so.

Just like any other family, we Exabees too have a tradition that we keep every other year — the Christmas & New Year Party! It is where we take some time our and drop all the work that we were doing and just enjoy the company of each other in laughter and true joy. After all, it’s times like these that bring us together!
The event started with dinner consisting of 60 of us Exabees indulging ourselves in an array of delicious food. Some of us also brought our children over just for this particular occasion. 😀 You know, the more merrier! Look at em scrumptious food!

Once we were filled, the first activity of the event started. If last year we had The Best Looking Santa game, this year we had the Treasure Hunt game! During this game, we hid about 60 presents inside the office and each group needed to collect 8 pcs of presents and report to OC once they got it. The first group that collected the 8 pcs of presents first, will be the champion of the game! 😀

After 15 minutes of chaos, Group1 managed to find all 8pcs of presents and won the treasure hunt. The best thing is, all the presents that they found, will be theirs to keep! How awesome is that? 😀
After that, the event continued with another activity of the day, which was the Gift Exchange ceremony.
During this time, all of the Exabees gathered at a room, and one name by one name is called to exchange their gifts with each other.

Needless to say, it was a fun and memorable event for all of us in Exabytes. Also not forgetting, the OCs for working hard to make this one an enjoyable one for all of us. Long live Exabytes!
As the sequel to the previous post about Photon CGM Game Jam, it’s time to find out the winners and also the piece of work created by each team.
Before we reveal the teams with their masterpiece, allow us to introduce all of you to the panel of judges…
Panel judge no 1 – Mr Chan Kee Siak, the CEO of Exabytes.
Panel judge no 2 – Dr. Ganesan Velayathan, the CEO of Fun & Cool Ventures.
Panel judge no 3 – Mr Siow Aik Wee, the senior Executive of Industry & Business Development, Creative Multimedia Division, MDeC.
The judging process was fairly simple. The game had to be a multiplayer game that is fit within the “Malaysia” theme and “Durian” element. Other than that, the judges scored the game based on the originality of the game materials, creativity, and overall gameplay and graphic. Every team had to come forward to present and demonstrate their game to everyone.
So without further ado, allow us to introduce the first team to give their presentation…
Meet “The Noobs”!
They are a group of students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). This was their first time experience in joining an event such as game jam and due to the lack of experience, unfortunately their game faced a little technical problem and crashed at the last stage of development. As such, they were only able to present their ideas and concepts behind their game.
And then, on to the second team, “Coffee”!
The members of “Coffee” consisted of professional programmers and designers who are working in game developing companies.
Their game, “Clash of Gasing” is a 4-player game which combines orang utan (the iconic Malaysia animal), durian and gasing (spinning top). To win the game, player (who play as a orang utan) launch their gasing to push their opponent’ gasing to the sharp durians, and the last standing player wins.

And then, there was the third team, “DST2”, featuring some talented students from Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC)
In their game, the player controls a monster to move around a farm to collect as many durians as possible, which randomly drop from trees all across the map.

Then followed by the presentation of team “Ivy”
Ivy has 3 members. However their team mate left before the presentation due to emergency. “Ivy” would strike as a team with female members in your minds, no? Actually the name IVY was originated from 3 first letters of their names! 😉 Pretty cool, no? 😀
Like team DST2, they also created a durian collecting game. But the difference is the environment is not in a farm, it is around a pyramid. Initially they planned to design another game. However they encountered some bottlenecks in terms of the design issues, so they switched their backup plan to produce this game.

Next, was the “Digital Ark” team, consisting of three young app developers who had just established their own startup “Digital Ark Malaysia” in the mobile application industry.
Unlike most racing games that portray race cars or sport cars, they designed a lorry racing game called “GDL Racer”. In the game, the players act as a lorry driver. The mission is to deliver a load of durians to a durian festival as soon as possible.
The game has a well designed landscape with Malaysia landmarks like KLCC and KL Tower. Besides the detailed graphic, many of us were impressed by the physic they have applied to the movement of the lorry and also the durians. If the player drives too fast or drift too much the durians will slip and fall from the lorry. When the lorry hits the bump with too much speed, it even performs stunting acrobatic flip. Pretty neat, huh?

Moving forward, the next team is called, “DST”, another bunch of talented juniors of DST2 from TAR College.
Coincidentally they also have designed durian collecting game. Though they are all programmers who had zero knowledge in game development, yet they were able to learn the modeling skills to create the objects and landscape in their game.
Of course, last but not least, was the last team “Imagination”, a group of 5 students from University Malaya.
In their game, the player wanders around the farm to collect durian (again?? is it durian season already??)

However, instead of merely collecting durian, the Imagination team put in some intense elements into their game by having monsters walking around in the map. The player must avoid the monsters while trying to collect durians. Because of the limited time frame, they only managed to produce a prototype with much room for improvements. We certainly hope to see that Imagination can further optimize it in the future.

After all 7 teams have presented their games, it was time for the judges to evaluate their games to determine who would crown the winner. While awaiting for the judges to score every team’s work, we brought a wonderful meal to celebrate everyone’s hard work.
Yeap, plates and plates of sushiiiiiiiiiiis!
And different flavors of onigiri! 😀 😀 😀
After what seemed like a million years, the result was finally in the judges’ hands! Yeap, they were going to reveal the score for every team with score boards.
So so so! Who do you think won the competition? 😀 Well, the winner of Game Jam 2013 competition that won mutual votes from the judges went to —

Alright — Digital Ark’s awesome GDL Racer! *clap clap clap*
Congratulations to Digital Ark for winning the trip to Japan and also $5000 tapsmart.net CPI credit!
For other jammers especially the first-timers in game jam, don’t give up! You have done your best and kudos to you all! Take this as a good lesson and experience and you definitely will do better in the game jam events in the future.
It’s a pleasure to know you and we are looking forward to meeting you all in the next game jam!
If you could achieve one goal in 36 hours, what would it be? For 33 folks who gathered in Exabytes’ premise located in SetiaWalk on 14-15 Dec, all of them had one goal – creating an awesome game in 36 hours. After days of preparation, Exabytes first game development marathon event – Photon CGM Game Jam 2013 finally kicked off on 14 Dec.
Seven teams consisting of 33 local game developers and university college students strove to create an awesome game in 36 hours with Unity + Photon to win the grand prize – a trip to Japan and $5000 CPI of ad network service for mobile game apps, respectively sponsored by MDec and tapsmart.net.
Before the marathon started, each jammer (participant) was given a Game Jam 2013 T-shirt and a cool military tag embossed with his/her name, courtesy of MalaysiaMilitaryTag.com.
Then, they were served an array of delicious food buffet for breakfast to face the upcoming challenge. While feasting their tummies, the jammers also took the chance to mingle and know each other better. Of course, being the hardcore gamer that they are, it had to revolve around games! What is your favorite game? Ooh what combination to get that power? You know, that sort of thang.
Shortly after the breakfast, the event started with Ms Sabrina from Exabytes as the MC of the event, welcoming Mr Chan Kee Siak, the CEO of Exabytes to present his keynote speech. Mr Chan gave a warm welcome with some useful advice to the all the jammers. He mentioned in his speech that he is hopeful to see that this event will become a good opportunity to all the participated game developers and students to learn from each other and make new friends.
Pn Faridah from MDec and the CEO of Fun & Cool Ventures, Dr Ganesan were also invited to become the speakers in the opening ceremony. Dr. Ganesan Velayathan, a successful game application developer who is best known for achieving over 2 million of worldwide download click-ons for his “Sushi Friends” Android OS-based game application, shared his impressive game developing experience and journey that turned to his success today.
Followed by the inspiring speech from the speakers, Mr TW Ku, the event coordinator, briefed the rules and guidelines of the game jam to the jammers. One week before the game jam, we had announced the theme was “Malaysia”. On top of that, we also requested the teams to blend in an additional “element” into their games. The element was announced on the event day itself, right before the game jam started. To the jammers’ surprise, it was something they were very familiar with…
Yeap, it was the king of fruits, DURIAN! Then the gun went off and the marathon started! Every team started scratching their heads for an idea to blend durian into their Malaysian game storyline. Would there be games like durian versus zombies, durian monster, or durian race car? 😀 Boy, we sure were excited to see the interesting results!
Time sure did fly and before we knew it, it was lunch time. We have prepared great delicacy to serve the jammers. Just look at ’em mouth watering dishes!
However, these hardcore jammers were so into developing their game, even these mouth watering dishes didn’t make them move an inch from their seats!

After one point, we thought the food were going to the bin, untouched! 😛 Luckily, their tummies growled just in time and they came out for lunch.. finally. Just look at the foodstuff we have prepared for the jammers besides the breakfasts, lunches and dinners!

Lots of snacks, coke and energy drinks to revitalize and help keeping their mind clear for 36 hours, yo! Anyway, back to what happened on that day — few hours passed and slowly but surely, we started to see some prototype designs.
Pretty cool, eh? 😀 Few jammers even brought some gadgets to aid their game development.
Countdown timer to keep their game development on track.
Also the books for reference. Every team was trying their best to win these grand prizes.
Pretty awesome, huh? 😀 More hours passed and soon, the sun started to set and it was dinner time. Look what these lucky participants had for their dinner — that’s right, some juicy chickens from Kenny Roger’s, yo!
Soon the day turned dark, and after having their dinner, it was time for the jammers to go back to their workstation and continue the “battle”.
When the time came to the wee hours in the morning, some jammers finally felt exhausted and were wrapped in a deep slumber.
This team, “The Noobs” enjoyed their breakfast and seen as fresh as daisy in the second day. Besides having a good rest, another possibility of their “freshness” could probably be the big pile of evidence left on their desks.
Hehe, sure looked like they had revitalized themselves with so many healing potion, eh? Nothing can beat ’em good ‘ol 100 Plus!
On the second day, we prepared pizza for the jammers as lunch, so they could work against the clock for their game development while filling their stomach.
The clock was ticking. Everyone rushed for the final hour so they could complete their games before the deadline.
And then.. the time was finally up. We gotta say, well done to all the jammers who has worked so hard for so many hours! Mean time, the panel judges also dropped by at the participants work station to check out their work before the actual presentation and judging took place.
Anxious to know what games each team has produced and most importantly, the winners that walked away with a trip to Japan and $5000 CPI of ad network service? Let’s find out in the next post!
