“Dong Dong Chang” On Our Auspicious First Day of Work!

0

Date: 13 February, 2013
Time: 8.30 am
Venue: Exabytes HQ

The 4th Day of Chinese New Year, also the first day of work after the beautiful holidays, two auspicious red lions appeared at Exabytes headquarters, bringing together with them good luck and prosperity to wish Exabytes Happy Chinese New Year! Bringing in the surprise were the performers of Lion Dance who dressed in yellow T-shirts. Lion Dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and an auspicious ceremony to scare away evil spirits and attract luck and fortune.

As CEO Chan, his dearly family members and Exabees wearing red were anxiously expecting the arrival of good luck, at 8.30 am the first hit of gong was heard. Amidst cheering and clapping of hands, two red lions danced into our reception area with their full fledged gong equipment. The truly ear-shattering ‘Tuck Tuck Dong Dong Dong Chang’, ‘Dong Dong Dong….. Chang’ was heard everywhere, scaring away the bad evils and bring in the good luck.

Upon reaching the reception area as well as dancing and greetings by the lions, one of the auspicious animals rested his head on our front desk, before approaching CEO Chan to tuck in the auspicious pineapple and pomelo. In Chinese Hokkien, as the pronunciation of pineapple is similar to “luck/fortune come” (also has similar pronunciation close to ‘online’), we are elated to see the very luck-promising lions ‘eating’ the fruit from the hand of CEO Chan.

Our spirit runs high as the lions adjourned to our meeting room, followed by the fun room and finally the desks of respective departments at Exabytes HQ such as Customer Service Department, Technical Department, Sales & Marketing Department, Creative Department, etc.

Certainly, the last and the most exciting endeavor was to ‘pluck the green’ aka ‘Cai Ching’ in Chinese, using their exceptional martial arts skills.

Looking at the green hung around 6 feet high at the entrance of Exabytes, the two auspicious animals danced gracefully before one of them making its Kung Fu jump and got the green in one single attempt. Amidst a big round of applause, flashes of cameras were seen to capture the important moments.

Finally, this motivating dance event was wrapped up by a group photo taking session together with the lions. We know that it signified an abundance of great luck, auspiciousness and fortune in year 2013, a year filled with great success and plenty of happiness. Exabees wish to thank CEO Chan for inviting the lions and the performers of Lion Dance for their spectacular performance!

Exabytes Retro Annual Dinner Brought Us Way Back to the 1980s (Part 2)

0

As the serving of hot delicious Chinese New Year dishes continued, we knew that we had to get ourselves ready for the next award giving ceremony as well as more fun and exciting games – musical chairs and balloon stomp.

While all attendees were making noise chatting and mingling around, our emcee of the day Sau Hun interrupted by announcing the next program – Award Giving Ceremony for Employee of the Month (EOTM) 2012 as well as 5-Year and 10-Year Service Awards.

Going to the stage one by one, our 12 EOTM received their certificates and cash from CEO Chan, for their outstanding performance which raised the benchmark for all Exabees.

Following this was an even more prestigious award, Exabytes 5-Year and 10-Year Service Award!

Congratulations to Kevin Ooi and Chia Ying for grabbing the 5-Year Service Award, as well as KY Chan (Office Manager) and PY Ooi (Business Development Manager, Malaysia division) for grabbing the 10-Year Service Award!

We at Exabytes salute you for your immense dedication to the company.

Next, it’s the game that we had been waiting for, musical chairs. Around 10 chairs were arranged in a circle; Exabees walking around the chairs must race to sit down in one of them when the music stopped.

A simple game as it sounds, it was able create many fun and memorable moments for us to cherish.

While emotion was running high, the emcee introduced another game to further boost the atmosphere. Balloon stomp, a game that required each participant to tie an inflated balloon to one ankle was about to start.

To win, participants were to burst other participants’ balloons while keeping theirs intact when the signal to start was given. The person with the last intact balloon will be the winner!

To reward the person with the best ‘quickstep dance skills’, our 3 winners (the champion, first runner-up, second runner-up) would receive attractive prizes including vouchers, cash and backpacks.

Next, it’s time to for us to decide who dressed up the best for the night. Our Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female would both be rewarded with an iPad mini.

But in order to get nominated for this award, the person had to really stand out from the crowd in the costumes he or she wore!

Clement and Jerrick were proudly nominated for the male category, and Annie Ong and Candice for the female category. Check out their costumes!

Clement C (left), one of our nominees for Best Dressed Male

Jerrick Yeoh, one of our nominees for Best Dressed Male

Since there were two nominees for each category, both of them must ‘battle’ by dancing on the stage to win the heart of the audience.

Clement took a softer approach by doing his own old school dancing while Jerrick was more aggressive in his moves. Soon Annie and Candice took over the stage and entertained us with their slow but graceful dancing.

Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female

Congratulations to Clement and Candice, our Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female of the night for bringing home an iPad mini!

It was around 10.15 pm and the event had nearly come to a close. However, none of us was willing to leave our seats and say goodbye to each other, yet.

This was because the final round of lucky draw was about to begin! In this round, huge prizes such as two units of 42” Smart TVs, a Nikon camera, an EOS camera, a Dell laptop, an iPad, cash, etc were up for grabs!

Congratulations to all the winners for their extraordinary luck!

Finally, the clock struck 11! Before bidding farewell to each other, we definitely didn’t want to miss the chance to capture the beautiful night.

After posing for the group photos, many lucky winners brought their prizes home which marked the beginning of auspiciousness in the year of the Snake!

Exabees wish to extend a special thanks to our organizing committee for making this event such a memorable and enjoyable one!

The year 2012 was a very important and remarkable year for Exabytes. It’s the year we found new talents, completed 3 acquisitions, published our first book, set up our new office in Singapore, widened our Cloud Hosting location coverage, expanded our eCommerce platform / network and established a special partnership with AIMS Data Center to run a data center in Suntech, Penang Cybercity.

Sweat and tears are words to describe the challenging yet rewarding year of 2012. Exabytes wouldn’t have achieved all these without the selfless dedication of all Exabytes teams (we call them Exabees). Although there were countless obstacles and sleepless nights, there were also many happy and rewarding moments as well as encouraging growth and achievements. In 2012, we are pleased to have recorded:

  • revenue growth of 21%
  • profit growth of 18%
  • increase in number of customers to 67,000

The truth is, all these growth and achievements will not matter if our hardware and services do not offer the highest satisfaction and highest level of services to our clients. For this, we have expanded our cloud hosting location coverage to now include Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Singapore, Japan and the United States. In addition, with the accreditation as one of the Official Cloud Hosting Providers, we are excited to have joined major players in the country such as Maxis, Microsoft, Jaring, Skali and Vads in providing the most reliable cloud hosting services to clients.

The incident of cloud sabotage in 2012 was much regretted, but it had not stopped Exabytes from growing and spreading its wings further. Today, we are thrilled to announce that we have outgrown the cloud in KL & Cyberjaya with over 500 cloud hosting accounts.

Last week, our team successfully held our own cloud seminar “ISVs’ Journey to The Cloud”, an event aimed to assist and educate independent software vendors in the country to market and sell their “Software and services” over the Internet with solid and practical skills with the power of Cloud Hosting.

Easy.my Expansion

We are glad to have completed 3 acquisitions as follows in 2012 in an effort to expand Easy.my platform towards a more robust eCommerce hosting and online shopping mall.

a) CYPE

b) Exabytes eCommerce

c) Exabytes venture

As the largest online shopping mall in Malaysia with over 7,000 retailers and as the gateway for local merchants to reach out to global-wise customers, Easy.my’s acquisition of Hinetmedia is part of its strategy towards becoming ASEAN’s largest online shopping virtual mall. With the acquisition, Easy.my now serves over 10,000 eCommerce merchants selling over 100,000 products online.

Banking on its simplified interface, hassle-free e-Store setup and cost effectiveness for merchants to promote their products without spending much on time and money in setting their individual eCommerce websites, Easy.my is looking forward to recruit 20,000 more online merchants in line with market growth of social media and online retailing by 2015.

At the same time, we will soon introduce Easy.my Parcel and LED Advertising service and loyalty rewards program.

We Welcome Our New Investors

We welcome two Exabytes new investors with open arms – Dr. Lee Kim Sien & Dr. Kat Yok Ming.

Our Focus In 2013

This year, we shall focus on 3 major areas:

a) Web Hosting

b) Cloud Hosting

c) e-Commerce Hosting

We shall continue to work hard and smart as a team to achieve our goals. Success won’t just happen overnight; Rome wasn’t built in a day. We shall not forget how and what makes us successful. We shall always remember we are in the service industry; quality of service is of paramount importance. Be shall live up to our customer service promise: Customer First, Responsiveness and Professionalism. We shall always be creative and innovative in improving our quality of services.

In 2013, we aim to achieve at least 30% growth in revenue and 50% growth in profits, as well as having a new cloud facility in Kuala Lumpur.

Exabees as a team will aim towards becoming the leader in web hosting, cloud hosting, eCommerce hosting in Southeast Asia.

My Gratitude

My sincerest gratitude goes to all Exabees and their family members for their selfless dedication, trust and support. All the above would not have materialized without your efforts and contributions! Last but not least, a million thanks for the trust, guidance and encouragement offered by our valued investors for their effort in helping to bring Exabytes to the next level.

Thank you!

Chan Kee Siak

Exabytes Retro Annual Dinner Brought Us Way Back to the 1980s (Part 1)

0

Date: January 19, 2013
Time: 6.30 pm – 11.00 pm
Venue: Hydro Hotel Penang

If you happen to step into Carnation room at Hydro Hotel Penang on last Saturday after 6.30 pm, you might feel like you’ve gone back in time to the 1980s as celebrities and stars like The Beatles, Chan Poh Chu and Xiu Fong Fong were all seen having a gathering dinner together.

Explosion hairstyle, old-fashioned sunglasses and hair bands, huge earrings were spotted everywhere; but if you looked closely, you’d soon discover that these old-school fashion wannabes were no other than Exabees who were celebrating their 11th annual dinner with great fun and excitements.

The fantastic prizes which were up for grabs on the night included:

  • 42″ Smart TV x2
  • Ipad x1
  • Ipad Mini x4
  • Ipod Nano
  • Dell Laptop  x 1
  • EOS Camera x1
  • Nikon Camera x1
  • Backup HDD   x1
  • External HDD x 2
  • Steamer  x3
  • Luggage  x1
  • Business Bag
  • Portable Speaker x3
  • Hamper x5
  • RM200 + 200 Voucher + Backpack x 2
  • RM100 + 100 Voucher x 2
  • Dining Voucher x3
  • Ang Pow x6

A total of 12 tables were set up for over 120 participants, which included Exabees and their spouses as well as the family members of Exabytes shareholders.

The wonderful night started with CEO Chan and Dato Tan giving their speeches at the very beginning to kick-start the annual dinner. Bringing us back to our 11 exciting years was a video that played on the projector.

Reminiscing the sweet memories, we were startled by our emcee of the day, Sau Hun when she announced that the first lucky draw (for early birds only) was about to begin. An iPad mini was about to be given away!

Congratulations to Fifi, the first lucky winner of the day for arriving early and grabbing the ‘first’ prize!

At around 7.20 pm, the first course of meal was ready to be served. This was no ordinary course though; every Exabees would be tossing everything served on the plate before tucking in. Yes, you’ve guessed it right!

It is the very popular ‘yee sang’ (a Chinese New Year dish)! At the same time, the toss is auspiciously called ‘lou sang’ or prosperity toss, a very popular tradition for Malaysian businessmen.

Soon the second course ensued, and we were ready to move it and have some fun being a limbo dancer! ^-^

After several intense rounds, Ku emerged as the champion of this challenging feat, and was crowned as the man who has the most ‘bendable’ torso!

Next, it’s Lucky Draw Round 2! In this round, attractive prizes such as an iPod Nano, external hard disks, backup hard disks, hampers, portable speakers, dining vouchers, etc were to be given away.

Congratulations to all the winners and we hope that this winning marks the beginning of auspiciousness in the year of the Snake!

Subsequently, Exabees are going to play some jovial and amusing games such as musical chairs. Some were lucky enough to win Grand Prizes such as 42” Smart TVs, an iPad and a Dell laptop.

Stay tuned to the upcoming post!
