The Only WordPress Performance Hacks You’ll Ever Need

0

A plain search for improving WordPress performance yields millions of results which include tutorials, how-tos, and posts.

That’s because WordPress powers a huge chunk of websites (42.7%). Webmasters around the world have been trying various methods to turbocharge their site performance.

Add to this navigating the world of WordPress plugins, themes, technologies aimed at improving performance.

Whether for a seasoned developer or a beginner, finding all the relevant and useful information on WordPress website optimization in one place can be tough.

This can soon turn the site optimization experience into a nightmare. As a result, when the website starts to bottleneck, webmasters may find it tough to determine where to start troubleshooting.

Hence, in this post, we have included all the hacks for turbocharging your WordPress site.

But before that, let’s understand why it’s critical to boost WordPress performance.

Why Should You Speed Up WordPress Websites?

Modern searchers expect websites to load within seconds. In fact, 40% of searchers will abandon a site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.

Another study by Portent found that the first 5 seconds of page loading time has the highest impact on a site’s conversion rate.

Also, Google has already announced that site performance will be a prime ranking factor. Hence, poor page performance can negatively affect your site’s SEO.

So, your page loading speed influences everything, from traffic to conversions, UX, and ultimately profits. Hence, the best strategy you can adopt for your business is to boost your site performance.

This detailed guide will show you how to speed up your WordPress performance and boost your ranking and visibility.

12 Best Hacks to Improve WordPress Performance

You may be convinced by now that poor page loading speed can make site visitors leave, never to return. Hence, WordPress site optimization should be the top priority for every website owner.

Besides counting on a WordPress website development company there are several tactics your in-house SEO team can adopt to boost site performance.

Let’s review them one at a time.

1. Know When to Start

A slow website alone isn’t a sign that your WordPress performance needs speed optimization. When a site isn’t optimized for performance, it gives several warning signs. It is critical to stay alert to these signs.

  • Site Outages during High Traffic

How well does your website stand up to a crisis? Does it crash often during high traffic?

Sporadic website outages are often a sign that either your site needs to be optimized for speed or the hosting is struggling to keep up with the traffic load.

  • Repetitive Out of Memory Errors

Complex sites need more memory to operate. For instance, if yours is an ecommerce platform with loads of plugins, you can expect that the horsepower required to run it will be higher than any small business site or blog (typical ‘content and contact forms’ website).

So, if your site isn’t optimized for better performance (eliminating unwanted plugins/themes or tweaking WordPress configuration) it will give repetitive out of memory errors.

  • Multiple Timeouts

Poor speed optimization (slow database queries or load on the server from a shared hosting account) can at times cause timeouts. Before investing in a virtual private or dedicated server, it’s wise to address underlying WordPress performance problems.

  • Partial Page Loading

When a page seems to partially load or stall, you may need to look for alternative hosting or infrastructure options like investing in a CDN.

  • A Sudden Drop in Conversion Rate

If you haven’t made any sudden or major changes to your site and have a steady stream of traffic but see a noticeable drop in conversion rate, it could mean that your site has a speed problem.

  • A Drop in Search Ranking

Google has been factoring site load time into search engine ranking for some time now. The search giant considers TTFB (time to first byte) as an important metric to assess page performance.

So, if you are staring at a blank screen for a long time, your TTFB is probably high and your search rankings are bound to suffer.

  • A Need for Constant Hosting Upgrades

If you have to constantly upgrade your hosting package it’s a sure-shot sign that your website isn’t using resources efficiently.

Knowing when your website needs a performance boost is half the battle won. So, make sure you watch out for the aforementioned telltale signs.

Further, we recommend analyzing your website’s load speed using tools like WP Engine Speed Tool.

2. Get Rid of Unnecessary Plugins or Themes

Unused plugins not only slow the site but add points of security vulnerability to your site. Besides updating your plugins and themes, it’s also important to delete the ones that aren’t in use.

Delete the ones you aren’t using by deactivating them and then deleting them from the inactive plugins list. Further, to clear the mess that uninstalled plugins have left behind, you need to run a WordPress cleanup using phpMyAdmin.

Here are the steps –

  • Log in to phpMyAdmin.
  • Search for orphaned rows (data left behind in your database tables).
  • Delete the unwanted rows.

3. Invest in High-Quality Web Hosting

Though this is a basic step to improve WordPress performance, it’s worth a mention!

Avoid shared hosting to eliminate the risk of bad website neighbors who can pull down your WordPress performance.

On the other hand, a dedicated server may be too much of an investment if you do not have a huge website.

We recommend going the best managed vps hosting for a balance of speed, cost, and comfort. Alternatively, you can rely on WordPress hosting options that are specifically optimized for running WordPress sites.

4. Minify CSS, HTML, and JavaScript

If you run a web performance test using Google PageSpeed Insights, there may be a prompt message saying that you need to minify JS and CSS files. This means you should reduce the JS and CSS calls to optimize your site’s backend.

In this process, you reduce the file size of your HTML, CSS, and JS files and get rid of unnecessary characters, like spaces, line breaks, and comments. Thus, the amount of data transfer is less, thereby improving site performance.

Doing so will reduce your server response time and minify the size of the files. You can either minify these files manually or use a WordPress cache plugin like Breeze, WP Rocket, CSS Compressor, or Autoptimize.

5. Get Rid of Unnecessary Widgets

More often than not, WordPress webmasters get carried away by widgets. Though widgets may seem to make the website more functional, they come at the cost of negatively affecting site performance.

Widgets generate several requests on the front end. Each request is another call to the database. Hence, they tend to make sites sluggish and bulky, thereby slowing them down.

So, to boost WordPress performance, it’s wise to reduce your dependence on widgets. Only use the ones you need or count on codes to make your site more functional.

6. Optimize WordPress Database

As you use WordPress, the database tends to collect a lot of information that isn’t needed. This junk (spam comments and unused data) slows down the website over time and hampers its performance.

To boost performance, it’s advisable to optimize the database by getting rid of unnecessary information. This can be done manually or using plugins like WP-Sweep, WP Database Reset, and WP-DBManager.

The plugins can easily fix the issue and clean the database by deleting trash posts, unused tags, and revisions.

7. Minimize External Scripts and HTTP Requests

Most WordPress plugins and themes tend to load various kinds of files from the website. For instance, they may load external scripts, JavaScript, fonts, stylesheets, images from Google or Facebook, and HTTP requests.

Most of these files are optimized to load quickly. However, if your plugins are making several such requests it could slow down the website. For loading these scripts your server will consume a lot of bandwidth, thus impacting site performance and SEO.

Hence, it’s important to reduce such scripts and requests. Check your site’s source code to spot scripts you aren’t familiar with. You can reduce external HTTP requests by merging them into one file or disabling scripts and styles.

8. Paginate Comments and Long-Form Content

Most WordPress websites and blogs deal with comments. However, over time the comments section will gather thousands of comments that need resources to load. This can negatively affect site performance.

Paginating comments is a healthy practice because it allows users to load comments when required. This can significantly improve site performance. Paginate comments by navigating to Settings > Discussions.

You can also paginate long-form content to shorten the length of the page, allowing it to load quickly. This also makes the content easier to consume and boosts readability.

Most of the WordPress themes allow developers to paginate content from the backend. However, if you are unable to find it, open the single.php file in your editor and insert <?php wp_link_pages(); ?> in the WP loop.

9. Lazy Load Images

Too many images, multiple embedded videos, and photo galleries can slow down a website. Such websites can benefit from lazy loading.

Lazy loading allows images to load as users scroll down a web page or as and when the user reaches the part of the page where the image is.

Since all the images and other elements on the page do not load at the same time, it doesn’t overwhelm the server, thus improving the site’s performance.

You can use lazy loading not just for images and videos but also for WordPress comments and gravatar.

For images, videos, and iframes we suggest using the Lazy Load by WP Rocket plugin.

10. Use the Latest Version of PHP

WordPress is primarily written in PHP. Simply put, this server-side language is installed and runs on the site’s hosting server. Hence, using the latest PHP version has a significant impact on site performance.

In fact, a new-version PHP is faster than its predecessors. This is enough to appreciate the importance of the updated PHP version.

To upgrade the PHP version, follow these steps.

  • Take a backup of your site because a few plugins may experience compatibility issues.
  • Create a clone of the WordPress site using your desired version of PHP. This will help you test the performance of the installation. Use the hosting clone feature for this.
  • For upgrading, follow these steps.
    • Download PuTTy to access your server via SSH. Now access your server using its IP, username, and password.
    • Go to the root directory and run the ‘php -v’ command to confirm the current version of the PHP.
    • If you need to upgrade to the 7.4 version, you’ll write the command – apt install php7.4
    • Run the php -v command again to check whether the latest PHP version is installed on the site.
    • Go for this option if you use a VPN or a dedicated server.

11. Invest in CDN

Users located at various locations can mean a lag in content delivery and poor user experience. That’s where CDN comes in handy.

When you’re running an eCommerce store, your audience would belong to several countries or locations. You cannot have slow loading speed of the site. Otherwise, eCommerce user experience will get hampered.

Therefore, you need a CDN that can streamline your user experience.

Using a CDN (Content Delivery Network) ensures that your site’s content is delivered at blazing speed, regardless of the user’s location. A CDN is a network of servers around the world, each storing static files (images, CSS, and JavaScript) used to build the website.

With a CDN, each time a user visits your site, they are served these static files from the server closest to them. This means improved site performance. Moreover, since the CDN is doing most of the work, your web hosting server is relatively free and will be faster than usual.

Count on WordPress CDN solutions like MaxCDN, Cloudflare, and CacheFly to improve the experience for all your users located in different geographical locations.

12. Disable Hotlinking

Hotlinking is the practice of using images that aren’t hosted on your website. Simply put, it’s a term used when a site uses another site’s resources.

This consumes a lot of resources. For instance, if your content is popular and someone has taken an image from your website, once their site is loaded, the image will load from your website, thus consuming a lot of bandwidth and resources.

All this hugely impacts the WordPress performance.

To stop hotlinking, add this code to your .htaccess file.

  1. RewriteEngine on
  2. RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
  3. RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?EXAMPLE.com [NC]
  4. RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?google.com [NC]
  5. RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?feeds2.feedburner.com/EXAMPLE [NC]
  6. RewriteRule \.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif)$ – [NC,F,L]

Remember to replace example.com with your domain.

Summing Up

In today’s digital world, speed and performance is everything. If your site is slow and not performing well, your site traffic, ranking, and ultimately bottom line will be impacted. Hence, no webmaster can afford to ignore this aspect of website management.

We hope that the tips and tricks shared in this post will help you optimize your WordPress performance. Go ahead and try these tips. You’ll be surprised to see the immediate improvement in your site’s speed and performance.

To upgrade the PHP version, follow these steps.

  • 50% of exporters found it hard to deal with the legal and customs regulations

Data Analysis: The Future Trend of B2B Business

0

data-analysis-the-future-trend-of-b2b-business

Data has a big impact on day-to-day business operations. Based on a recent study conducted by MicroStrategy, data and analytics are used by 57% of corporations to create strategies and drive transformation; 60% used it to improve processes and cost-efficiency.

What is data?

In business, data refers to any pieces of information related to the business operation of a company, such as product information, customer contact information, financial records and more. Most business data are organised and stored in the company database.

Why is data important to business?

  • Track and measure internal and external company activities.

It enables you to know the weakness of your plans so that you can improvise them.

  • Make informed decisions.

We can identify the needs and wants of the customers that are trending and make decisions based on the data.

  • Find solutions to problems.

Data can turn into powerful insights, enable us to view our problems from different perspectives and solve them in ways that we never thought of before.

Why it is important to leverage data analysis?

We can’t make a conclusion based on fragmented data and it may result in a waste of resources. Hence, you need to leverage data analysis to:

  • Understand your customers’ interests and behaviour.

Knowing their interest and buying behaviour allows you to determine the factors which influence their purchase decision.

  • Investigate and analyse strategies that are used by your competitors.

You can make use of the data to create marketing plans that capitalize on your competitors’ flaws and stand out from the competition.

  • Identify the latest market trend and demand.

It is a must for businesses to keep updated with the latest market trends to ensure the marketing strategies in place are workable in order to stay ahead of the competition.

How to leverage data analysis?

There is an abundance of data for businesses. Thus it takes a long time to complete the analysis task. However, the majority of businesses still rely on manpower to analyse the data.

PLEASE STOP DOING THIS!

There is a TIME SAVING and EASIER WAY for you to do that!

What you need is a powerful B2B platform. For instance, Alibaba.com has all the built-in analysis tools to carry out the task! With the help of these analysis tools, all data will be presented in the form of charts and tables within a few clicks. In addition, the results of data analysis generated by these tools are more reliable and accurate.

How to do it?

Creating Content in Social Media that Converts

0

As digital transformation is growing dramatically, we want our brand to be visible on social media, as this is one of the best ways to reach out to our target audience and connect with them. Brands create content on social media, not only wanting to be visible in the digital world but also to convert target audiences into customers.

Now the question is what kind of content on social media can help in enhancing the conversion rate?

The emcee (Laureen Quah) and the speaker (Nowrid Amin) of the event.

Our recent webinar, ‘Creating Content in Social Media That Converts’ provided the answer. The audience learned how to create content that would attract their customers effectively and led them to take the action.

Here are some takeaways of the session:

1. Solve problems

Why are we creating and consuming content? We do so to solve a problem. When people search online, they hope that the search result can lead them to solutions. For example, how to write an article, how to cook spaghetti, etc. If you are thinking of providing solutions to your customers’ problems when crafting content, then you are on the right track. Content that does not solve a problem can’t create a long-term engagement with the audience.

2. Write engaging captions

The first line, which is also the headline, needs to draw the attention of the audience. It can be told in different ways: it can be an offer or a shocking/interesting statement. If your first line is not good enough to hook your audience, chances are they will not read the rest of the content and will not engage with you. Thus, the first line needs to be the best, so the audience will engage with what you post and take further action.

3. Four steps to creating good content

a. Attention

We live in a world full of choices and distractions. There are different kinds of content in the digital world, so making your content stand out is important. To grab the attention of the audience on different channels, we need to have a catchy headline to effectively grab people’s attention.

b. Open the loop

Once you get the attention, you need to hold it for a longer period of time because if your content is not interesting enough, you might lose your customers. Therefore, you need to keep their interest by giving them some teaser and excitement.

c. Create desire

Mention the benefits of your products and services and what can your customers achieve by using them. As mentioned, people are seeking solutions that can impact their life. So good content needs to create desire. It can be achieved by showing the audience how the solution will impact their life. Desire can be created in different ways. Offering discounts or promotions is a good example.

d. Action

When people like your product, they will want to know where to buy it. And here is where CTA (Call-to-Action) plays an important role—it motivates people to take action (buy or opt-in).

Creating an online presence is also important for businesses as it helps build brand awareness, and social media is a good place to start with. By posting good content on social media, businesses can drive customers to their website, increase website traffic and sales at the same time.

In this webinar, we’re pleased to have invited Nowrid Amin, Head of Digital Marketing, Juwai IQI, to share his valuable insights on how to create social media content that converts successfully, the 4E Content Marketing Rules and the 4-step strategy to creating amazing content for social media.

Content Modeling for Marketers: Making Your Content Work Harder

0

As a marketer, if you create content regularly, you might get stuck at some point. The reason for this is a lack of content strategy. The solution to the problem is to have a content model that can guide us and help us in crafting the content for different platforms.

The panel discussed the topic ‘Content Modeling for Marketers: Making your Content Work Harder’. In this session, the audience walked away with the practical tips for building simple, easy-to-use content models that make creating effective content a breeze.

The moderator (Samantha Tang) and the panelists (Phin Wong, Stephanie Sekar & Raymond Siva) of the session.

Let’s look at some takeaways of this session:

1. Understand the objective

It is crucial to know the objective when it comes to creating content. What are your intentions? What do you hope to achieve with your content? It is difficult to tell if your content will be successful without knowing the objective of the content. For example, is the content made for education, to change people’s mindset, or is it for brand building purposes?

2. Going viral

If you work in an online marketing agency, you know it’s very common to hear a request from the client to have their content go viral. Nowadays, people are too obsessed with going viral to get attention and exposure. Bear in mind that the kind of content that can go viral does not necessarily match your brand or business. Instead, focus on asking these questions: who is your target audience? How are they reacting to your content? Are they reacting the way you want them to react?

3. Learn to pivot

Marketing is important for every business. To develop an effective marketing strategy, we should learn how to pivot (and not avoid it), especially in today’s digital world. Pivoting means flexibility. When we are conducting a marketing campaign and it is not going well, we need to understand the data and try a different way—in this case, different content. We should not keep doing the things that don’t work just because we planned it. When the data shows an undesired result, stop it and do something else that works.

4. Tell a good story

Various channels with different content are now available. It is a competitive environment for brands and businesses to create content. But a good story can make your brand stand out and attract people’s attention. Think of a story for your brand. Instead of a functional style of story, create a more emotional kind of story to connect with your audience. Besides, the story disseminated across different channels needs to be consistent so that the audience on different platforms know who you are.

5. Be authentic

When crafting content, we need to stay authentic with the audience. If the content does not relate to your brand, do not do it just because everyone is doing it. Not all trending content is suitable for your brand. Be authentic in the message and content you bring to your audience as they will know whether your content is authentic.

When creating content, remember it is not about you or your brand. It’s about your audience. You are creating content to reach out and communicate with your audience, so it’s recommended to look from their point of view and try to think about what kind of conversation they want to have. Start creating content with this mindset, and you are ready to go

Uplevel the Reach and Power of Influencer Marketing

0

Many businesses are now using influencer marketing as one of their marketing strategies to grow their business and increase revenue. Social media brought rapid growth in the influencer industry, giving influencers the power to influence their audience by posting content on their social media pages. This creates a platform for businesses to reach out to potential customers and convert them successfully.

However, there are still some challenges you might face while implementing the influencer marketing strategy, such as choosing the influencers to work with. This panel discussion focused on the topic ‘Uplevel the Reach and Power of Influencer Marketing’ that will help you to understand the inherent challenges of influencer marketing and enable you to realize the full potential of this powerful marketing method.

The moderator (Wintson Tham) and the panelists (Aditya Aima, Pandu Nitiseputro & Boni Andika) of the session.

Let’s go through some key takeaways from this session:

1. Target Audiences

When considering influencer marketing, we need to first think about our target audience. Know your audience so that you can find the right influencer that attracts the right target audience with the right content. Besides, being authentic with your audience when reaching out to them will increase the trustworthiness of your brand.

2. Delivering Value

Other than determining who your target audiences are, you also need to think about what value your products can deliver. Showing your product value is similar to demonstrating the benefits you can bring to your audience. Therefore, determine the benefit which the audience would appreciate, then work with the content creator or influencer to come up with content that highlights those benefits.

3. Feature your products

Influencers can feature your product in their videos to expose your brand to their followers. For example, if it is a beauty product, the influencer can create a tutorial video on how to use the product. Influencer marketing does not have to be promotional, even though in marketing we always focus on promoting products and increasing sales. But for influencer marketing, the influencer can give a sneak peek to their audience about your product in their day-to-day life. This makes the content look more natural and effective, allowing audiences to develop interest and want to know more.

Giveaways also have the potential and power to generate engagement and reach out to the audience. You will just need to provide your product as a prize and the creator will create a giveaway and content for the product.

4. Objective

It is significant to know the objective of your business when you are doing or planning to do influencer marketing. The objective is to determine what kind of influencer you want to work with. For example, if your objective is to build awareness and reach out to a bigger audience, it is recommended to go for mega or micro-influencers as they have more followers. If the objective is to create another funnel for conversion, go for a more specialized micro-influencer or nano influencer because they engage more and are more intimate with their followers.

5. Look from different angles

When you are thinking about what kind of content you can create to promote your products or services, try to look from different angles. Try to think about what stories you can create for your brand that can arouse your audience’s interest. Explore a different angle of the content you can make with your products, you might find out the content that could resonate with your audience as it brings benefit to them. An example was given during the panel discussion: when promoting a hotel, other than promoting the pleasant view and environment, you can also promote your customer service in your social media content.

The Bottom Line

Influencer marketing is becoming a trend in online marketing. Many brands have collaborated with influencers to create marketing campaigns. It is an effective marketing strategy as brands can directly have their products or services showcased to a group of target audience through the creative content of the influencer they with with.

During the pandemic, most people took their business online for the first time. In this digital world, every business needs a social media presence to connect to customers and build a stronger relationship with them.

Beyond getting your business on social media, being on the right social media platform is also important to market your business more effectively.

A brand’s social media presence can impact people’s perception of the brand positively or negatively, which means online presence has become part of the brand story.

To let the audience perceive your brand positively, it is vital to determine the right platform for your business. We’re glad that the panelists have shown the audience how to choose the right social media platform.

Essential Tips for Choosing the Right Social Media Platform

Some key notes from this panel discussion:

1. Know the people you want to reach

People go to different social media platforms for different reasons and for different consumption. For example, people go to Facebook because they want to know the latest happenings around them; while on YouTube, people are searching for something that activates like ‘how to…’.

Therefore, it is important to know what kind of audience you want to reach or the audience you want to build. For example, if you want to build your audience on YouTube, you need to create content that is very helpful to the people who are looking for you.

2. More than demographic

When targeting an audience, not only should you consider their demographic but also their emotional and mental state when they consume the content on different platforms.

For instance, audiences on Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok are more likely to consume the content for fun and being entertained; on LinkedIn, the audience is there to search for company information, manpower, etc.

3. Find the right talent

While many businesses started to use social media as one of the main channels to communicate and engage with the audience, the importance of hiring talents to manage the social media platforms is still underestimated.

The person who is responsible for managing your business’s social media presence needs to be creative, analytical, social, and human to build an effective social media community. Thus, companies need to find the right talent.

4. Content is King

Some business owners might say that they do not have the budget or ability to go for multi-channel solutions, but this shouldn’t be a reason to ignore the content part of social media.

Provide the consumer and audience with the content they want. When you are on social media, it is not about the number of followers you have on your page, but the engagement between you and your audience.

If you have thousands of followers but most of your posts gain only around 5 likes, it’s a sign that something is wrong with the way you create content.

5. Mistake is part of the game

Learning is key when doing AB testing to choose the right social media platforms for your business. This also applies to the type of content to post on the platform.

During the process, there might be mistakes and failures, but it is part of the game. AB testing enables businesses to try different things, make mistakes and learn from the mistakes.

At the end of the day, the mistake we had gone through before will help us in finding the most suitable platforms and content for your business.

Choosing the right social media platforms and having a social media presence help build positive brand awareness. Brand awareness helps to attract the target audience.

Therefore, we need to make good use of social media as a tool to promote brand awareness, let more people know your products and have a positive experience with your brand.
