How to Start Selling Wholesale Clothing Online

The wholesale clothing business is a lucrative one.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the wholesale clothing business is experiencing a major change.

This year, the industry is anticipating the following trends: eCommerce continues to grow; clothes become genderless; increase in sales of comfortable clothing; online shopping evolves.

Are you also planning on entering this lucrative industry? If you are, read on.

This post will teach you everything about the wholesale clothing business and how you can increase the chances of success in this highly competitive industry.

What is a wholesale clothing business?

A wholesales clothing business sells bulk clothing to retailers, who then resell the product to customers or end-users.

Since wholesale clothing manufacturers buy in bulk, they can sell their products at a much lower cost. Retailers benefit from reselling at a higher price.

Some wholesalers produce clothing in-house, while others serve as a liaison between manufacturers and retailers.

How to start a wholesale clothing business?

Understand the Industry

Before you dive into wholesales clothing distribution, you need to first understand the clothing industry. There are many opportunities in the clothing industry, but also some potential challenges you might need to consider. Staying on top of rapid developments in this sector necessitates alertness and agility.

Many social and pop culture trends influence the clothing industry. A specific clothing item or accessory may become a hot commodity overnight. Social media and influencer culture have a major impact on this. If any post or video goes viral in social media, the demand for an item of clothing featured in the post can skyrocket.

These fads come and go as quickly as they appear. This generates a condition of “high risk/high reward.” Knowing which patterns to follow – and how much inventory to buy – can be difficult to determine, since predicting demand can be difficult.

Understanding clothing trends and the market is an essential before stepping into the industry.

Choose a niche

There are many different types and styles of garments out there, but you cannot sell them all. Decide what type of garment your wholesale clothing business will sell.

Other than considering what garment you choose, you may need to decide the target audience you want to serve. For example, if you’ve decided to sell formal shirts, identify what sort of retailers you’ll sell them to. Will you sell to a luxury store instead of a discount store? Will you sell to retailers catered towards the Asian market or European market?

You need to brand yourself and niche down even more to align with a specific target audience. This will relate to the style of clothing or how it is manufactured.

Have a clear idea and direction to help you create a business plan to market and sell your garments.

Create a business plan

Creating a plan for wholesale clothing business gives the direction for you to navigate through the startup process. With the niche you decided, craft out the overall business plan as below:

Build your own identity

Lay out the details of your company, such as what you’ll see and to whom you’ll sell it. Determine the issues that your product solves. Create a client avatar that represents your ideal client (ICA). Determine how you’ll reach out to your target audience.

What is an ideal client avatar (ICA)?
A customer avatar is described as “a detailed profile of your ideal customer”. It makes no assumptions or divides people into classes. The avatar focuses on a single individual and describes him/her in detail. It goes far further than a standard marketing persona, giving marketers a lot more targeting options.

Budget and financial planning

List out all the expenses you need to get started and how much you will need every month or quarterly to sustain operations. How much money will you need to achieve your expected break-even?

Carefully plan your budgeting and spend it on what is necessary. Compare these expenses to how much money you have available. Did you have sufficient funds to get started or did you need to get more investors to invest or apply for a business loan?

A well-budgeted plan will help you define the business challenges and issues you need to face.

Build a team

A team with some executives to head operations, sales, marketing, supplying, distribution, etc. is necessary for starting a business that will be sustainable for years to come.

Each department will handle different kinds of business activities in terms of operation, marketing, sales and financial management. Hire workers for jobs like order fulfillment, inventory management and customer service.

Work together with your team to brainstorm ideas to penetrate the market and sustain it. Figure out what roles you need to fill and start hiring talent in the market. A reliable team will power a business to success.

Document internal processes

Record daily activities, employee onboarding, lead generation, marketing campaigns, order fulfilment and other processes that make the business happen. Processes that are consistent and tailored to better represent the company and consumers are critical.

The aim is to provide concrete guidelines for someone to step in and manage your company when you are not available to do so or if you employ a CEO and delegate operational duties to him/her.

Also, documenting internal processes helps to figure out areas of improvement to ensure business sustainability and standstill in the market. Learn the mistakes from the last campaign and improve or enhance in next campaigns.

Having a process documented helps to both maintain the consistency in operations and to help identify and tweak to make improvements.

Secure licenses and permits

When starting and operating a new business, you are required to understand the legal action and formalities in your area. Different places have different legal action and formalities you must follow if you want to start a business in those places.

Generally, your business must be registered as an entity, whether that be a corporation or an LLC. It helps to protect yourself as an individual, since it keeps both the finances and legal implications as a separate entity.

Look into local guidelines and restrictions to see what you need to do when you start in another location. It keeps your business protected and makes things easier at tax time. Seek help from a local tax professional and business lawyer for further advice and consultation.

Set up your physical location

Next, decide on a physical location for your business. It depends on whether you are manufacturing your clothing yourself or you just need a factory or a warehouse to store inventory and fulfill orders.

As a clothing wholesaler, you have the option to manufacture clothing in your own factory or just grab it from another manufacturer. Options will cost differently as you may need a bit of capital to get started if you plan to operate your own manufacturing factory. Well, it will have a high return on this investment if everything goes right.

You will need to consider whether you will rent or buy. Renting gives you the flexibility to start small and move into something bigger as your business grows. However, you do not own the factory if you rent it.

Deciding a physical location for your business not only considers what business model you want to go for but also depends on your capital to rent or own the factory or store.

Determine your prices

Setting prices is not an easy task, because you can’t set the price too high or too low based on your own perception. You may need to find out the competitive middle ground.

Here are the questions you should define when determining your prices:

  1. Identify the cost per unit you’re manufacturing or sourcing from the third-party manufacturer
  2. Compare among your competitors’ prices and demand for the product
  3. Find out how much retailers are willing and able to pay for

Basic formula for wholesale price calculation:

Average cost of goods manufactured + profit margin = wholesale price

Remember, prices are always negotiable when we talk about wholesaling. Add extra padding in the pricing if you want some room to lower down on prices without compromising your profit margin.

Create an online storefront

To sell products online, you need to have an online storefront or e-commerce website first. You can create a storefront on a B2B e-commerce marketplace, such as Alibaba.com, or build your own e-commerce site.

Upload all your products in an e-commerce marketplace or own e-commerce site with attractive and clear product descriptions. It is important to describe your product’s features in detail so that buyers will better understand your products.

Always get your customers to rate your products and services in the online storefront. It increases the potential customer confidence toward your products and also one of the best marketing strategies.Chekhup-Alibaba-ClientIf you have no idea where to find a trustable B2B marketplace to expand your business overseas, I would suggest you look for our Alibaba GGS Plans. For more details, visit our Alibaba page or talk to our sales consultants at [email protected]

Organise your product listings

Product listings are important on the online storefront. It helps to speak to your customers online about your products without any physical interaction.

Having a clear product image, title and description become a key success when a potential client first reaches out to you. Let’s talk about how to organise your products in a more presentable way.

How to curate your product listings to be more attractive and presentable

  1. Use high-quality photos that capture your product from different angles
  2. Take a video of the garment to show the overall customer experience
  3. Choose keywords that your audience searches for
  4. Use the keywords in your product titles and descriptions
  5. Describe your product in more attractive ways and tell your customers “how your product will solve their issues”

Creative product listing will keep the buyer at the forefront.

Start selling your products

It’s time to start selling once you’ve finished setting up your storefront and product listings. You’ll either have to close deals via direct conversations with clients or fulfill orders from submitted forms, depending on how your storefront is set up.

Invest some time to hone your sales skills. Learn how to build a good relationship and optimise your sales pipeline. You may need sales pipeline software to manage all the deals and leads from your sales team. Always brainstorming with the team to improve sales skills, marketing strategic planning and customer support skills.

A trained AI chatbot is necessary to integrate on your online storefront to help you support your customers when your team is not available. Learn how to do online selling thru live chat.

It would be difficult to make enough profits to keep the company afloat without the right salesforce and help.

After-sales

Always keep in touch with your client after a sale. It is important to set up a solid foundation and eventually grow your wholesales clothing business.

Schedule a call to follow up with the buyer 1-2 weeks later after they’ve received the order. Ensure everything ran smoothly and was delivered as expected. Get their feedback to improve the overall customer journey experience. It can be done with an online survey over the follow up email or a phone call, if necessary.

Build good relationships with those buyers and get their help to refer their friends if they are satisfied with your products and services. Update them when your new product launches.

4 Types of Affiliate Programme You Need to Be Careful

4 Types of Affiliate Programme You Need to Watch Out

An affiliate programme is to create a new source of revenue for online marketers — freelancers, influencers, bloggers, review sites, content creators.

They will introduce affiliate products to their followers, and they will earn commissions when followers make a purchase through their affiliate link.

In the previous article, we talked about how you could make money even while you sleep with affiliate marketing, and we believe that you understood the concept.

However, we also want to protect you.

Therefore, you must be aware that there are scammers in the affiliate marketing niche, just like every other business type.

Here are 4 affiliate marketing scams you should look out for.

1. Fake Training Opportunities

As a newbie in affiliate marketing, you will find that many people will start offering you training on making money through affiliate marketing.

They will come with e-books, online lectures and training. Many are nothing but scams.

Don’t get us wrong. We are not saying that educating yourself is a bad idea.

However, we are saying, “why pay for what you can get for free?” Instead of signing up for a course or training with so much money, you can use Google to educate yourself with the same knowledge.

There are a lot of valuable tips on how to kick-start affiliate marketing online.

Our free articles are an excellent place to start your course!

> Check out our Affiliate Marketing guides here

2. Get-Rich-Quick Programme

When the deal looks too good to be true, there’s usually something fishy lurking around.

Don’t get carried away by programmes that promise to make you a millionaire overnight.

Affiliate marketing is a real business. Therefore, you need time and strategy to make money.

Before you sign up for any affiliate programme, ensure that they a defined and realistic payment plan.

3. Paid Affiliate Network/Programme

Here’s a quick overview of how affiliate marketing works.

Affiliate networks are just like a marketplace.

The companies will post their products or services there, and affiliate marketers will then go in and pick the products or services they wish to sell on their website/blog. It’s that simple.

Therefore, paying to join any programme doesn’t make sense.

No legitimate affiliate marketing programme will ask any marketer to pay to join their network.

In a way, you will be doing the company a favour by helping them sell their products or services. Why pay someone to sell their products for them?

You can join many affiliate programmes for free, including the most famous SEMrushManyChat, and Amazon. Just make sure to do your research.

If the affiliate programme is newly launched, you will need to check the following:

  • How long has this company been operating?
  • Do they have a good payment record?
  • How long has the domain name existed?
  • Are there any reviews you can check that validates the company?

If you can find the answers to these questions, you will immediately understand this company; and if its affiliate programme is legit or not.

a male is confuse graphic

4. You Do Not Understand What You are Selling (MLM/Pyramid Scheme)

The goal of joining an affiliate programme is to sell, promote a product or service and make money in the process. Forget about those who make the programme like pyramid schemes.

In the typical “pyramid” scheme / MLM programme, participants make money solely by recruiting a batch of new participants. The terms they usually use were;

  • The recruiter promises a high return in a short period of time(get rich quick)
  • No no need to sell any genuine product or service
  • The main focus is on recruiting new participants.

The pyramid scheme or MLM programme is not only illegal (some are legal such as Amway, always do your research first), but they are also a waste of time and money, and eventually, you get nothing.

Besides, if you choose to promote a product because the commission is high, you may hardly earn any good money from the programme without understanding what the product is all about, even if the pay is as high as $1000/sale.

There are 2 ways to go about this:

  1. Promote the products or services that you are familiar with. It could be something related to your hobby, something you love.

2. Educate yourself properly on a particular product or service to have a thorough understanding of what you are selling.

Time to Make Some Money

The goal of this guide is to show you the kind of affiliate marketing programmes to avoid. Always do your research thoroughly, be curious about everything, always ask why!

Platforms like Facebook and Linkedin allow you to join groups with affiliate marketers. You can learn a lot from them so that you can avoid costly mistakes.

If you are passionate about digital marketing, online marketing, website design and development, you may be interested in joining our affiliate programme.

How Digitalisation Can Improve Business Growth? The Surprising Role of Digitalization

0

How Digitalisation Can Improve Business Growth

Digitalisation has never been a necessity to businesses before the Covid-19 pandemic, as it has always been perceived as technical and pricey.

Even though many businesses have started to turn digital before the pandemic, the digital marketing platform has still not been fully utilised by most, despite the fact that digitisation increases productivity, efficiency, and economies of scale.

This is mainly due to the fact that they rely heavily on physical stores and outlets to increase their sales and boost public awareness regarding their brands.

Current Business Landscape

The business landscape has long since changed after the implementation of the first Movement Control Order. Non-essential businesses were forced to close temporarily, not to mention mass gatherings were banned throughout the country for an indefinite period of time. 70 per cent of SMEs recorded a 50 per cent drop in business in just the span of a week. (Amos & Rachel, 2020)

With that, many businesses realised the need to provide their businesses with online platforms in order to survive the Covid-19 pandemic. According to a study conducted by the Malaysian University Consortium, the use of digital technology significantly raises SME efficiency.

SMEs who were active on social media saw a 26 per cent increase in productivity, while those that employed e-commerce saw a 27 per cent increase in productivity. Furthermore, advanced digital technologies such as data processing systems have the ability to improve SME efficiency by up to 60 per cent. (The Impact of Covid-19 on SME Digitalisation in Malaysia)

Business Digitalisation

Many believe that digitising businesses is all about posting detailed descriptions of their products online through social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

However, that is just the tip of the iceberg, where in truth, competition among online businesses is extremely high and there is always a high chance for certain products to not be seen and recognised by potential consumers at all!

In fact, there is so much more to consider in the digital business world to successfully market your business online.

Creating an official website is known to be the first step to delve into the world of digital business. Businesses with an official website can establish a better online brand presence as well as increase consumers’ confidence in purchasing the products. Moreover, it is more secure and professional too!

For instance, a secure payment gateway and order forms are available to ensure a smooth shopping experience for consumers. Aside from that, the opportunity for customers to check for general details on the website increases productivity and revenue.

Zheelyn Collection stated that clients were more confident in purchasing their products due to the fact that they increased the payment options on their payment gateway.

Reasons to Digitalise Your Business

One of the main reasons to digitise a business is to be able to serve clients from all over the world at any time of the day! The live chat function available on the website can increase customer service professionalism and conversion rate as well by responding to inquiries quickly. Hence, it is definitely more convincing to consumers when they can access information about your products and services with a professional website available online.

The thoughts and benefits of digitising business sound amazing, but the fact that many believe that it is technical and pricey stops them from going digital. Many SMEs are plausibly unaware of government digitalisation programmes and incentives. As 60 per cent of SMEs stated funding as an obstacle to digitalisation, and they were unaware of the available financing choices.

With that being said, there are various incentives offered to SMEs to aid them in digitising their business. Exabytes’ Sama-Sama Digital is one of the programmes available out there to aid many SMEs in digitalisation. LLORA Bath & Body, Coolscarf, Zheelyn Collection, and many more have successfully stepped foot in the digital business world since the first Movement Control Order was implemented.

Success Stories

LLORA Bath & Body stated that with the subsidy offered by Exabytes, they are able to digitise their business with low start-up fees and an affordable annual plan.

Coolscarf mentioned that switching online makes the business 24/7 accessible for their clients with real-time catalogue, thus, they have since gained up to a 40% increase in their sales.

In an increasingly digital economy, digitalisation is vital to their long-term survival. The Covid-19 has boosted digitalisation in general, and SMEs in Malaysia are slowly embarking on this journey to improve business continuity.

With the availability of government programmes, subsidies and incentives for SMEs to digitalise their businesses, we are confident that the journey to digitalisation for SMEs is no longer a hurdle and they can thrive by digitalising in the long run.

Digitalisation in Fish Market Successfully Reaching Young Customers

0

Everything in our lives is slowly being digitised. People around the world are becoming more familiar and used to living with advanced technology, trying to get everything done digitally.

The way people purchase products and services has transformed due to the convenience of advanced technology such as online payments, e-wallets, and online shopping.

To adapt to this digital world, some businesses such as fresh vegetables market, groceries business and fish market have started taking steps to digitally transform to preserve themselves during this pandemic.

Some business owners may think growing a business online is difficult because they have run their business traditionally for decades.

However, digital transformation is not impossible for traditional business, as The Fish Club, a seafood seller in Malaysia, has shown through its successful digital transformation.

The Fish Club – Fish Market Before Digital Transformation

Image Source: The Fish Club Website.

The Fish Club was created in Pontian by a group of fishermen and fishmongers who were all good friends and family. The Fish Club’s history dates back many years, and the business has been passed down to many generations.

Its roots were in a little town where everyone knew one another. Today, the business still uses traditional methods to capture seafood, and The Fish Club families still live in traditional wooden houses!

The families have been fisherman and seafood suppliers for years. They have operated their business in a traditional way for three generations.

They would capture seafood early in the morning and immediately send it to the market to maintain freshness. Eventually, something started to change when the business passed down to the fourth generation.

The Fish Club – After Digital Transformation

Image Source: The Fish Club Facebook Page

To attune to today’s trends, The Fish Club started to move their business online two years ago. The Fish Club’s digital transformation allowed it to successfully receive orders online, bringing convenience to the customers who do not like to visit wet markets. The Fish Club then delivers the fresh seafood to the customers’ doors.

The viral trend of live-streaming on Facebook to sell products inspired The Fish Club to give it a try, and the result was better than they imagined! The first time the company live-streamed, it attracted around 6,000 viewers, and they played fun games to interact with the audiences.

By live-streaming on Facebook, The Fish Club reached young potential customers, bringing in more sales and loyal customers.

The online customers are mostly young people between the ages of 30 and 40 years old. This company proved that growing your business online will help expand your young customers base, effectively converting them into loyal customers.
